“Do you like Jill?” Her voice, on the phone, sounded different somehow.
“I don’t know. I mean, she’s cool, but I barely know her. I guess it’s not out of the question.”
“Oh,” she responded dully.
“What do you mean, oh?”
“What I mean is that I guess I should have hung out with you when I had the chance.” And with that the line went dead.
I was living most guys’ dream - two beautiful girls wanted me, and I hated every minute of it. I knew I would have to choose at some point, but it was just too good to give up either one. Somewhere along the line Jill and I kissed and Tara had found out. Things weren’t looking good.
“Can we please just go get coffee or something? I want to explain myself,” I pleaded to Tara on my cell phone.
“Fine. Be here in fifteen minutes.”
We ended up at a park, lying on our backs and staring at the cloudless sky. Hand in hand, our heads barely inches apart.
“We kissed and I don’t know why. It just happened. Why can other guys make out and it’s fine, but I kiss a girl once and my life is turned upside down?”
“It doesn’t matter. It’s over now. I really need to get home.” She stood and started walking toward my car on the other side of the darkened park. I caught up to her and wrapped my arms around her skinny frame; her breasts against my chest, her head resting on my shoulder. I took a breath and the humid air mixed with the smell of her shampoo coated my lungs. We stood there in silence for a few minutes.
“What would you do if I kissed you?” I asked, my voice shaking with every syllable.
“You missed your chance, just like I missed mine.” She broke my hold and slid into the passenger seat of my car. I stood under the street light for a few moments as mosquitoes ate me alive. I climbed into car just as the rain began to fall. I looked down at the screen of my ipod. It read Death Cab For Cutie, Plans - an album I had owned since it came out, but had never listened to. We didn’t say a word the entire way to her house.
“Bye,” she whispered as she climbed out of the car, slammed the door and ran through the rain before disappearing inside. Thunder crashed above as the first notes of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” spilled from my car speakers. I backed out of her driveway, lowered my windows and sped off down the suburban street. Within seconds I was on the highway, my car quickly climbing to a speed of 120 miles per hour, rain pouring in through the open windows and sun roof at an alarming rate. I couldn’t breathe. My heart felt heavy and my mouth still tasted of shampoo and humid air. As I pulled into my driveway, my ipod and engine were brought to silence and I sat there for a minute, soaked with fresh rain, my head hurting from thinking so much, my stomach tied in knots. At that very second I knew it was over. I had lost two beautiful girls and one amazing song.
